Once Sam got home to her apartment that evening, she couldn’t shake the convergence of thoughts in her head. At the forefront was Miranda’s suggestion that the facts didn’t line up, that Erik’s death may not have been caused by a typical asthma exacerbation.

Then there was Erik’s note to “verify counterselection.” Counterselection of what? Sam had learned from the scientific articles she’d read that researchers use selection and counterselection techniques to ensure the Drosophila strains they work with contain only the genetic markers they’re interested in. Was this something Erik was going to discuss with her the morning he died?

And Professor Galloway really hadn’t been much help, despite the fact Erik had scheduled a meeting with him, presumably about that counterselection issue. Dr. Galloway had said he’d only met Erik a couple of times, so they didn’t really know each other that well. Perhaps Erik would have discovered the person he really needed to talk to was Dr. Hawthorne, had he lived.

Even though Brooke hadn’t known what the Post-It meant when she’d seen it the first time, Sam decided to press her again. Dr. Galloway seemed to think highly of his former student, and presumably, she already knew Dr. Hawthorne. Since Sam was scheduled for clinic at the beginning of the following week, she went to her desk and sent Brooke an email about the visit to UT, asking her to reach out to Dr. Hawthorne regarding Erik’s counterselection note.

As a last resort, if Dr. Hawthorne proved to be another dead end, they could always ask Greg. But she really didn’t look forward to talking to him about anything, for a variety of reasons.

And in Sam’s mind, if there had been foul play with respect to Erik’s death, it seemed to come back to Greg. Plus, she now knew he’d been upset when Erik had become a founder of Redew—a company using technology based on Greg’s work in Dr. Galloway’s lab. Sam could understand why he’d be disgruntled—she’d be jealous, too, if she’d been in his situation. But she’d never resort to murder.

Perhaps Erik had reached out to Greg, to ask him about this counterselection issue he’d found. What if Greg had met with Erik at Redew and killed him?

But how? Who could help her sort through this?

Miranda. She’d been the one who’d set Sam’s mind on this track in the first place. Maybe she would know what everything meant.

Sam dug through the pile of papers next to her laptop, mostly printouts of scientific articles with a few bills scattered throughout, and found Miranda’s card buried at the bottom. After she dialed the number on her cell, it rang several times and went to voicemail.

“Hi, Miranda. It’s Sam. I have—uh—“ What should she say? She has a suspect?

No. Not on a message. Plus, who did she think she was? Nancy Drew?

She’d decided it was just best to leave a message to call her back, when her phone started buzzing. It was Miranda. Sam clicked “End and Accept.”

“Sorry, I didn’t get to the phone in time,” Miranda said.
